MECHANICSVILLE, VA (WWBT) - As you can imagine, word spread quickly of the shooting on Virginia Tech's campus today. In fact, many parents who have students on campus quickly scrambled to make sure their loved ones were okay. We caught up with one family, who has a daughter on campus.
There was one word that came to find when that mom found out her daughter was okay: relief.
Teresa Morck's daughter Erika, was only a 5 minute walk away from today's shooting --- sleeping in her dorm room when gunshots erupted.
Hours later -- you could still hear the uneasy nerves in Teresa's voice. "When I saw that 540 number come up on my cell phone, it kind of scared me."
And rightfully so. That's certainly not the call and text you expect to get from the campus where her daughter is, more than 200 miles away from home.
"You kind of want to get in your car and drive to Virginia Tech, but you also know they have it under control," added Teresa.
She had some comfort at home too. Her son was by her side and she had her Virginia Tech Hokie jacket keeping her warm.
For the thousands without any connection to Tech at all -- the news was still jarring.
"Not again, it's like how can this happen twice?" asked one person.
"Oh no! Not again!" said another.
Many of you took to our Facebook today, letting us know you're child was safe. Others were offering words of sympathy, for the thousands of Hokies going through yet another tragedy.
A tragedy that Teresa admits will change the campus. But, a tragedy that will not undermine the determination of her daughter -- and Hokie Nation. "As parents, we know they are going to be okay because that's what Hokies do!"
