CAROLINE COUNTY, VA (WWBT) - A Chesterfield man shot by a Virginia State Police trooper has died.
Herbert J. Wheeler Jr., 32, of the 100 block of Flintlock Drive in Chesterfield died Friday morning following a series of events Thursday that led to his death.
On Thursday, around 1:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-95 near mile marker 120. Wheeler fled from his vehicle after being stopped by a DMV special agent for reckless driving.
Around 2:30 p.m., Wheeler walking along I-95 approached a tractor trailer driver who had stopped on the side interstate around mile marker 118 to check a flat tire. According to police, Wheeler tried to get inside the truck before fleeing again.
Trooper Michael H. Hamer responding to the scene, finds Wheeler walking on the right shoulder of I-95 near mile marker 116 in Caroline County just before 3 p.m. The trooper puts him in the back of the cruiser when a struggle begins. Wheeler tried to take the Trooper Hamer's gun and during the fight the gun goes off shooting the trooper in the leg. Trooper Hamer then shoots Wheeler with another gun.
Three good samaritans stopped and helped the trooper who was severely bleeding.
He was taken to Mary Washington Hospital where he is still recovering from his wound.
Trooper Hamer has been with Virginia State Police since 1996.
The investigation into the shooting continues.
