Sussex deputy injured while responding to crash

SUSSEX, VA (WWBT) - A Sussex County sheriff's deputy responding to a tractor trailer accident loses control of his vehicle on Route 40 hitting another car head on.

Deputy Carlos Turner, 37, of Sussex, was traveling westbound when he crossed the solid double lines striking the vehicle Jason Davis, 31, of Jarratt was driving.

Both men were airlifted to VCU Medical Center with serious injuries.

Virginia State Police is investigating the crash.

The tractor trailer accident on I-95 Deputy Turner was responding to happened in the southbound lanes at mile marker 33 around 6:40 a.m.

The tractor trailer driver, David Jeffries, 42, of Florida, swerved to avoid another vehicle, ran off the road and jackknifed.  He has been charged with reckless driving.  He had minor injuries.
