RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Right now, there's a lot of action going on at the Cloverleaf Mall. Demolition began in October.
Crews are working fast to get the Kroger grocery store built. Next we can expect new stores and housing.
If you can't hear the demolition, you can certainly see it from the road. The contractor says people should expect machines to continue tearing down the building for the next several months.
Workers have already destroyed the old Sears tire building and the Cinema. Right now, they're setting the ground work and foundation for the new 123,000 square foot Kroger. They hope it will bring more jobs and customers to the mall. Supervisors say they're on schedule.
Workers are demolishing the Sears building. It will actually be the parking lot for the new Kroger. Once they finish there, they'll demolish the main mall and finally end at the old JC Penny.
The contractor hopes to complete demolition by mid March of 2012. The developer, Crosland Southeast, hopes to attract more retail stores and housing for the next phase, but has not said if any tenants have signed on yet.
