PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - A 91-year-old man is killed in his own Petersburg home, in what police are calling a brutal murder. Now, your help is needed to solve the crime.
Police are sending flyers, going door to door, asking for the publics help to solve the brutal murder of Clarence Butcher.
A lone light shines through the window at 91-year-old Clarence Butcher's home. But, it's the light of this community that is turned off, all because of a violent murder.
"I've known him all my life," said Bill Wiggins. "It was really a shock when police knocked on my door at a quarter to two and told me about the homicide and Mr. Butcher got killed. It brought tears to my eyes."
Wiggins has known Clarence for nearly 60 years.
"He was a real nice person. He was one of my idols," said Wiggins.
Police say on December 3rd around midnight, Butcher was killed in his own home. A person of interest has been identified. Police will not release the name of that person to us.
We do know Butcher was not shot. Sources tell us he was beaten to death.
Neighbors tell us that the attackers broke into Mr. Butcher's home when he and his daughter were inside. Those neighbors also tell us that Mr. Butcher's daughter told the attackers to stop stomping on her dad.
Porch chairs still sit in front of Butcher's quiet home. "He would sit on his porch, enjoy the water and different people that knew him, would sit on the porch and talk with him," adds Wiggins.
The life lessons over the years learned there, will never be forgotten.
"I'm hoping and praying they'll catch whoever did this," said Wiggins.
Investigators say they are continuing to work on the details surrounding this murder. If you know anything that can bring some justice to this family and this community, call Petersburg Crime Solvers at 861-1212.
