Possible hate crime in Henrico

SANDSTON, VA (WWBT) - A Henrico family feels they're the victims of a hate crime after vandals spray-painted a racial slur on the family's car this weekend.

The family lives in the 4700 block of Brad Drive in Sandston.

Only one car in this neighborhood was vandalized with this racial slur. It just so happens the car belongs to the only African-American family on the block.

Jacquelyn White's family came out Friday morning to find their 2009 Chevy Traverse tagged with white spray paint. Vandals spray painted the N word in large letters across the passenger side of the SUV.

White says her family has lived in this Sandston neighborhood for four years and never had an incident before.

"I couldn't believe someone would come into your personal driveway and then have the nerve to spray something so derogatory on my car for no reason," White said.

Police say they're investigating this as a vandalism and say it's too early to call it a hate crime. White feels her family was targeted.

"Our car is the only one vandalized," she said.  "It's somebody that knows who we are and, for whatever reason, wanted to let us know they don't appreciate us being here."

White says it's hard to explain the graffiti on her car to her kids.

"I can just drive them to the bus stop and then back up down the street so the kids on the bus won't see it," she said.

She now has a rental car while she waits for her insurance company to file her claim. Her family moved to this neighborhood because they say it was quiet - now she wishes she could get out of there.

"Our sense of safety is just gone," she said.  "I feel violated. If I could move, I would."

Police say they have little evidence or information in this case so far. Police are looking for any witnesses that might to able to help them solve this case.

If you have any information, you're asked to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
