Petersburg apartment fire displaces 13 people

PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - An early morning fire in the 1000 block of West Washing Street in Petersburg has displaced thirteen people, including four children.

The alarm came in around 4:16am Thursday morning. Petersburg firefighters were on the scene had the fire under control in less than 30 minutes.

On arrival, flames were coming out of the 2nd floor of the right side of the duplex. The duplex housed four apartment units.  The structure received heavy damage from the fire and will be red tagged by the City.

Two adults residing in the complex were injured while escaping from the fire. They were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Red Cross was on scene and will provide housing for the displaced residents for three days.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation. Petersburg thanks Chesterfield and Fort Lee Fire Departments for providing back fill at Petersburg Fire stations during the blaze.
