String of car breakins prompts warning from police

PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - Put your junk in your trunk, along with anything else you don't want people to steal out of your car. This news, after a string of car breakins in Petersburg has police on alert.

It's quick. It's easy. It's quite frustrating, too. Crooks looking to steal whatever they can see in your car, just from walking by. In the last two months -- there have been nearly 20 victims in Petersburg. Most of the cars had unlocked doors.

"People get desperate around the holiday season so just be aware of your surroundings," said Jasime Reaves.

We checked Jasmine Reaves car to see if she too, could be a victim. Turns out, she had some Uggs in her car that were in plain view. "I wasn't even thinking about that," Jasime said.

It just all goes to show you how easy it is to forget what you have stuffed in your car.

We went car to car checking and, right across the street we stumbled upon this car with either a purse or laptop bag in the front seat, in plain sight.

Not five minutes later, Dove Brown showed up at her car. Turns out it was her bag full of school work.

"It doesn't take long for a crime to happen," said Brown.

"If you are going shopping, if you are buying presents and go store to store, they need to secure presents in the trunk of your vehicle," said Petersburg Police Lt. Chris Walker.

Police say sometimes people are even smashing windows to get to what they see. So far, Chuckey Mitchell, is facing charges for that in Petersburg. But police say more thieves are still roaming the streets, looking for the next victim.
