RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - More than three thousand people are expected to show up to the Richmond Convention Center on Thursday for a free Thanksgiving day meal.
Wednesday morning, hundreds of volunteers were putting on the final touches for the big feast! 3800 pounds of turkey, as well as, sides, pies, pastries and gravy will be served during the 6th annual Giving Heart Community Thanksgiving Feast.
"Anybody that walks in the door we'll feed them at no charge for a meal," said volunteer Davis Caskey.
Preparing enough food to feed three thousand people is no easy task. More than 800 volunteers have helped out since August -- including Casey Beaird.
"It makes me feel good. I consider myself privileged so it's a great opportunity for me to give some of it back," said Beaird.
This is beard's third year as a volunteer. It's the second year for Genevieve Downs. She wants to make volunteering a family tradition.
"It's a nice thing to be able to do for the community and then be able to go home and do it for our family," said Downs.
The smell of sweets led us to the back of the kitchen. We found Danny Mallory.
Nicole Bell: "So you're the pie guy?"
Danny Mallory: "Yes, the pie guy. It's great we have sweet potato, apple, and pumpkin."
Mallory started as a host for those who showed up for the feast. Now, he'll be serving thousands of pies.
"I love cooking and the chaos when it all comes together -- it's great," he added.
Giving to others -- while being thankful.
If you'd like to join the fun, the Thanksgiving feast will be in exhibit hall "A" at the Richmond Convention Center on North Third Street. Meals will be served from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
