Woman says she feels cheated after being laid off

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A Petersburg woman is back on the job hunt after being employed less than a week!

She said she wasn't the only one laid off from the same Chester company just before the holidays and wants to know why.

Christina Harvell called 12 after she said she was laid off less than a week after hired for packaging work at Pre Con in Chester. She counted on the money and job stability.

After all, Harvell said she'd been out of work five months before landing a job last Wednesday at the Pre Con plant on Jeff Davis Highway.

"Holidays are coming up so I was, yeah, really counting on it helping a little extra," said Harvell.

Harvell said she thought she was hired directly by Pre Con and later learned it was Advantastaff, a temp service. The company name on her badge!

Still she had hope for a promising future at Pre Con where for four days, she packaged cigarettes.

"She gave me a time frame of it could be a month or two, but again, she followed up if you're on time and you don't have attendance problems, then most likely we would be keeping those people," said Harvell.

Harvell said she got nervous when others were let go days before her. When she showed up for work Tuesday, Harvell said the guard stopped her at the gate. She said her name was on a list.

"We called Advantastaff and I said, 'hi I believe I was just laid off, (oh yes you were laid off, we'll mail you your check),'" said Harvell.

Advantastaff said it offers short time work that can range anywhere between more than a month to one day. Harvell would still like to hear from Pre Con.

"A reason why would be great," said Harvell.

Harvell said she previously worked in the healthcare industry and wanted something with more stable hours. She hopes she will land a job soon.

Pre Con issued a statement saying it's not laying off employees in any of its facilities. That it contracts with a temporary staffing service and had a short term spike in production at its Chester location.

Employees hired by the temp agency were aware of the temporary nature of the assignment. Pre Con added that it looks forward to the possibility of providing short term employment in the future.
