Hermitage and L.C. Bird set to rematch in Central Region championship game

Henrico, VA (WWBT)- Last season, Hermitage held off L.C. Bird, 17-14, to claim the Central Region championship and this Friday will see the two squads rematch in that championship game once again.  The Panthers and Skyhawks take the field for the Division 6 regional title and will meet at Hermitage.

The Panthers come in unbeaten at 11-0 and coming off a 14-0 win over Thomas Dale in the regional semifinal last Friday.  Hermitage's defense has been the story all year, giving up just 52 total points in eleven games, an average of just 4.7 points per contest.  The offense has also shown the ability to be high powered, averaging 32 points per outing and scoring 27 points or more in nine of eleven contests during the 2011 season.  Dylan Jackson has been a solid quarterback, while Derrick Green and Triston Wright have been offensive weapons as well.

L.C. Bird has an explosive running game that will try to penetrate the Hermitage defense, a unit that has only given up double-digits in scoring one time this year.  Somebody the Panthers have not seen is Yahkee Johnson, the Skyhawks' running back, who is quick and elusive.  Johnson has amassed 2,431 yards on the ground this season in eleven games, setting a program record.  Bird is 10-1 on the season with its only loss coming in its third game of the season, a 21-13 setback at Manchester.  While it doesn't boast the extreme numbers of Hermitage, the Skyhawk defense is very good, allowing just 8.5 points per game.  L.C. Bird survived Varina, 21-16, to reach the regional championship game.

Hermitage and L.C. Bird kickoff on Friday night at Hermitage at 7:30 pm.
