Charleston, SC (WWBT)- Entering Sunday, it had been a rough trip to Charleston for the VCU men's basketball team. The Rams had suffered losses to both Seton Hall and Georgia Tech in the Charleston Classic and looked to rebound on the event's final day. When the buzzer sounded, Shaka Smart's team had something to smile about.
Rob Brandenberg scored a game high 18 points as the Rams overcame a second half deficit and topped Western Kentucky, 69-64. Both teams had their runs, but the Hilltoppers looked to be pulling away in the second, when a 23-7 run gave them the largest lead of the game at 56-44 with 8:04 left on the clock. Brandenberg and Darius Theus would score the next ten points of the game to pull the Rams within two, and VCU responded to each small WKU rally to finally take the lead. The Rams would hit their free throws down the stretch and hold on for the win.
Theus chipped in 12 points, while Bradford Burgess and Troy Daniels each added ten. The two teams will meet again on Wednesday night at Western Kentucky for an 8:00 pm ET tipoff.
