HOPEWELL, VA (WWBT) - An overnight house fire in Hopewell has investigators on high alert and neighbors on edge.
It's the fifth house fire in a two block radius in almost a year and fire officials say this one looks suspicious.
The latest in the string of house fires happened on North 15th Avenue - directly across the street from one that happened less than a year ago.
"It scared us because I had a brother come in from out of town and the whole street was blocked off and he thought it was maybe our house," said neighbor, Josh Kyer.
Neighbors say this was another vacant home and fears it could happen again, since there are at least a couple other homes in the neighborhood that no one's living in right now.
"I don't like it because the house next door is abandoned now and they were all abandoned houses," said Kyer.
Over the last year, fire investigators have opened 4 other arson cases between North 15th and 16th avenues.
"Somebody in the neighborhood with a fire fetish...after 18 years of being here I think it's time to leave," said neighbor, Ron Jackson.
Fire investigators have not made any arrests at this time.
"People around here pretty much know who's doing it but they just can't catch them doing it, Hopewell Police are pretty decent, they'll catch them," said Jackson.
No word on how much damage was done to the home. If you think you know something about these fires and can help police, call crime stoppers at 780-1000.
