Police continue to investigate double shooting

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Police are looking for a man wanted in connection with a double shooting in south Richmond.

The two men were shot near a motel on Jeff Davis Highway. Detectives and SWAT team units surrounded a nearby motel just a block away from the shooting. Police say the victims called police from a BP down the street from the motel.

"It's bad," said one neighbor. "Crime, crime, crime. They need to get these guns off the street."

Officers say someone shot the men while trying to rob them around 9:45 Wednesday night. It was just an hour before the gas station closed for the night. The shooting is an unsettling thought for one neighbor who did not want to go on camera.

"Because it's bad. We can't even walk the sidewalk safely to get to work in the morning and to get home at night time."

Once police received the call, they went to a motel nearby to search for the suspect. The SWAT team moved everyone out while they investigated the area.

"This is all about caution," said Richmond Public Information Officer, James Mercante. "It's all about taking care of others in the area and officers' safety, so that's why you see resources rolled out."

The SWAT team also brought out a K-9 unit and canvassed the area for any signs of the suspect. They didn't find him. EMS crews took the two victims to VCU Medical Center. They're expected to be okay. Staff at the BP gas station say there have been several robberies in the area.

Detectives are looking for a man in his 30s. He's 5'5", and weighs about 175 pounds.  Police say he also has thinning hair and a slight goatee.
