Think of calories as fuel. That fuel can be turned into energy. Whatever fuel is not turned into energy becomes excess weight.
On average, men usually need 2000 - 2200 calories a day. Women need 1600 - 1900 calories a day.
If pregnant, nursing, tall or very active then calorie demands can be very different. See your doctor to discuss proper calorie intake.
