Day Before the Big Race

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - If you're not one of the 17,000 runners taking the streets Saturday for America's friendliest marathon you may want to steer clear of the roads Downtown.

The 34th SunTrust Richmond Marathon will also bring thousands of fans and cheerleaders to the streets of our city.

The day before the marathon is always hectic for organizers.

The Arthur Ashe Center in Richmond fills up with runners and their families who are checking in and checking out the merchandise. It's a busy day for volunteers and organizers who have been preparing all year.

"People are going to be working all night, marking the course, putting out mile markers, timing clocks, water stops. We've got the city helping set up barricades and street closures. Everybody's going to be working really hard to help get set up," said Scott Schricker of Sports Backers.

Veterans Day brought out many of those who would normally be at work on a Friday afternoon.

It's also a show of how many more are interested in the race this year.

"Biggest thing is to have fun. You're not going to enjoy it if you're not looking to have a good time," said Shannon Riley from Wisconsin.

"I'll be glad to get it over with and back to running because I like it not because I have to," said Samantha Hope.

Everything kicks off Saturday morning at 7, with the main marathon starting at 8.
