Multiple-car accident involving tractor trailer shuts down I-95 North

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The interstate was backed up for miles early Monday morning as people were on their way to work.

Not only did this accident delay drivers, but it also held up plans for bridge construction by about threes hours. VDOT was supposed to close down part of I-95 starting at 8:30 but had to wait until close to noon.

The multiple car crash was a big mess for cleanup crews.

"It's one of the big ones," said Billy Spivey with Coastal Wrecker. "Normally your have one or two car accidents, but this is pretty bad."

It came at an inconvenient time right in the middle of rush hour for dozens of people heading to work. At one point, the interstate was shut down going north. State police say a tractor trailer got into a wreck involving five other cars around 7:45 a.m. in the north-bound lane of I-95 near the Lombardy exit.

Six people were hurt. They're expected to be okay. Traffic crawled for hours after the wreck. State police directed cars through one lane and the right shoulder while people like Billy Spivey made their way to the wreck to clean up the mess.

"It's pretty bad, said Spivey. "All vehicles involved lost a lot of anti-freeze."

They used all the material they had to clean up the solution from all five cars.

"It was a good thing the big truck didn't leak anything because we'd be here for a while," Spivey added.

Crews were able to clean up and open all northbound lanes in roughly three hours. No word on any charges yet.

VDOT says the three hour delay in closing lanes for bridge repair work will not affect their overall time table.

No word on any charges. State Police are still investigating the accident.
