Shootout at Old Dominion results in another Richmond loss

Norfolk, VA (WWBT)- In their first meeting ever, Richmond and Old Dominion provided plenty of offense and excitement, but a late run and good defense allowed the Monarchs to emerge victorious and send the Spiders to yet another loss.

ODU scored two straight fourth quarter touchdowns to break a 28-28 tie and earn the 42-28 win.  The Monarchs would start the scoring when freshman quarterback Taylor Heinicke found Larry Pinkard for the score, and they would open up an 11-0 lead.  Aaron Corp would get going and hit Kevin Finney for a 17 yard score, as the Spiders added the two point conversion to pull to within three.  After trading touchdowns, the Monarchs would add another score heading into the half and hold a 25-15 advantage.  Old Dominion would open that lead up even more with a field goal in the third, but that's when Richmond came charging back.  In the fourth, Doug Howell recovered a fumble deep in Spider territory and returned it 96 yards for a touchdown, trimming the Monarch lead to 28-22.  After Richmond got the ball back, Corp hit Stephen Barnette, who made an amazing one-handed grab for a touchdown, knotting the score at 28 after a missed extra point.  ODU would march down and score again to go back up by a touchdown, and Paul Morant would pick off a Corp pass that led to another insurance score.

Richmond falls to 3-6, 0-6 in the CAA, and has lost six contests in a row.  Corp did provide a highlight, as he surpassed 2,000 passing yards for the season with his performance Saturday afternoon.  He tossed for 256 yards on 24-of-43 passing along with three touchdowns.

ODU, meanwhile, posted 587 yards of total offense while improving to 8-2 on the season and 5-2 in their inaugural CAA campaign.  Heinicke led the way with 373 passing yards and three touchdowns.

Richmond is back on the road next Saturday as the Spiders travel to Delaware.
