PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - An arrest is made in the murder of a Petersburg man who was shot and killed while leaving a convenience store.
30-year-old Weusi Donovan is charged with first degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Police say 28-year-old Lonniel Edmunds was buying snacks at the Salem and Sons Convenience Store in the 2300 block of Boydton Plank Road around 11:30 Thursday night when something went wrong.
Edmunds was shot and killed while leaving the store.
Loved ones of the victim say they're in disbelief.
"I'm still numb to the situation. I'm real numb I can't believe it really," said family friend, Demond Morris.
Morris say he and the victim were like cousins. He believes the shooting was a mistaken identity.
"There was a guy in the store who had on the same thing Lonniel had on and when he came out of the store the guy thought it was the other guy," said Morris.
Edward Massenburg, a store employee, heard the gunfire.
"Pop, pop, pop, pop. About 4,5 or 6 gunshots," said Massenburg.
Edmunds was shot twice.
NBC 12 went to Donovan's home in Prince George County. A man who identified himself as a family member said the family is trying to figure out what exactly is going on.
Loved ones say Edmunds leaves behind a 1-year-old daughter.
"He just lived life day to day, trying to make it, take care of his daughter," said Morris.
He says his buddy will be missed. The accused gunman is being held at Riverside Regional Jail.
The murder is the 6th in Petersburg this year.
