Roommate: Miss Virginia USA used gay slurs

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – NBC12 got a firsthand account from the angry roommate who said a drunk Miss Virginia USA went on a gay bashing rant this weekend. He accuses Nikki Poteet of using gay slurs and breaking furniture in the Church Hill house they rent.

It seems to be a case of he said, she said at this point. Nikki Poteet maintained the "accusations are inconsistent with her character," but Thursday night her openly gay roommate told us he's standing by his story.

Beauty pageants are filled with drama, as was the house where Miss Virginia USA lives early Sunday morning, according to her roommate Derek Powell.

He told NBC12 the problems started when Nikki Poteet and friend of his had some words. Then he said everything escalated and claimed she used what he called homophobic slurs.

Powell said those words were painful to hear from his roommate of almost a year.

"I'm almost 35-years-old and believe it or not I have never been subjected to those terms before," he said.

According to Powell, Poteet damaged his family heirloom and the altercation continued.

"She's lunging at people," he described. "She's obviously extremely intoxicated."

NBC12 spoke with Miss Virginia USA on the phone twice Thursday night to get her side of the story. She wouldn't go into detail about that night but gave this statement and called the accusations inconsistent with her character and added: "I currently, and will continue to, show respect and support for diversity throughout the Commonwealth."

Powell sent a letter to the Miss Universe organization because he disagrees.

"I just don't think that is a good role model for the Commonwealth of Virginia or young women or for anyone in general," he said. "People need to be held accountable."

The Virginia Commonwealth University graduate's statement goes on to say she has built a reputation "as an educated, hard-working, independent woman."

She also told us she didn't have the time to talk with us on camera because she was heading to Virginia Beach for this weekend's pageant, where the next Miss Virginia USA will be crowned.

It's worth noting, that no charges have been filed in the alleged incident last weekend.
