VCU student robbed at gunpoint, patrols increased

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Tonight, police are on high alert after a VCU student was robbed at gunpoint. In response to that crime, police are stepping up patrols to keep people safe.

The crime happened on Wednesday night, around 9:30 p.m., in the 1000 block of Park Avenue. That is right next to the Monroe Park campus of VCU.

It's a different feel tonight along park avenue for VCU student Austin Seay.

"We often walk by ourselves and we consider this a generally safe neighborhood. So, when you find out a robbery happens next to your home, you don't feel easy," he said.

Most students are feeling the same way.

"Pretty scary, absolutely. I think I'm going to go out and buy some pepper spray," said Rachel Little.

In fact -- Jovany Gonzalez even walked around campus with his buddy tonight -- just to be safe.

"The mixture between classes and stressing out with class, then you have someone put a gun to your that's even more stressful," Gonzalez said.

Police say it was a VCU junior walking by himself, that was attacked at gunpoint by 2 guys!

Police say the suspects popped out of the alley way along Park Avenue and came up to the student and forced him back into the alley way. That's when they robbed him of his stuff, including a backpack, Ipod, cell phone and laptop.

Richmond PD and VCU Police are stepping up patrols.

"Students need to realize this does occur and it doesn't just occur here in Richmond. They need to first remember to stay clam and give the perpetrator whatever they want," said Richmond Police Detective William Cutshall.

Detectives say that's what this victim did and that saved him from being hurt.

"Until they catch the guys I'm going to be on my toes. Walk in well-lit areas and maybe take a longer way home," added Seay.

Police do not believe the suspects are VCU students. Police are also following up on several leads.

Police do have a decent description of the suspects. One was wearing a black hoodie with gold lettering, brown boots and a black handkerchief, with a skull on it.

If you know something call Crimestoppers at 780-1000.
