RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Update: Thursday afternoon, Nikki Poteet sent the following statement to our newsroom:
"It is unfortunate that, during my last days as Miss Virginia USA, individuals would make these accusations against me, as I currently, and will continue to, show respect and support for diversity throughout the Commonwealth. Those that know me will agree that these accusations are inconsistent with my character and the reputation that I have built thus far, not only as Miss Virginia USA, but as an educated, hard-working, independent woman."
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Miss Virginia USA is under fire, accused of making homophobic comments.
Now several people are calling for the Miss Universe organization to weigh in.
There are dozens of comments about this on Internet websites and on Twitter. All surrounding Miss Virginia USA Nikki Poteet. A beauty queen accused of saying some ugly things.
According to the website, thinkprogress.org, the VCU grad's roommate claims she directed homophobic slurs toward him at a party on Saturday.
Derek Powell, who is gay, says Poteet became extremely violent and physical and called him and his boyfriend some names we can't say on TV.
Powell says this happened at the house they share here in Richmond.
He goes on to say that the beauty queen was extremely drunk and upset because she didn't have the house to herself.
Powell wrote a letter to the Miss Universe organization that reads in part, "Many young girls look up to your organization and look at these title holders as role models. This is not the kind of person that you want representing your honorable organization."
In a phone interview with the website, Poteet denies it all saying she likes gay people and that her roommate just wants to get attention.
No comment yet from the Miss Universe organization.
A new Miss Virginia is crowned this weekend in Virginia Beach.
