RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The jury has begun deliberations in the trial of Richard Wallace. He is accused of leaving his mother to die this past spring.
Testimony revealed disturbing allegations about the condition of Wallace's mother as she spent her final days on the couch before she died. The medical examiner said she died because so much bacteria entered her body causing her to finally pass away.
57-year-old Richard Wallace pleaded not guilty to elder abuse and neglect Tuesday.
He is accused of not taking adequate care of his 86-year-old mom, Elsie Wallace. First responders found Ms. Wallace dead on her sofa April 18; she had been living on it for months.
They say she had ulcers on her backside, her feet had turned black and she even had maggots on her body. The medical examiner says gangrene was the cause of her death. Bacteria got into her bloodstream through the ulcers on her body. They say she lived in an extremely cluttered house and did not go to the doctor on a regular basis.
Officials also tell us her son had not worked in years.
Wallace testified Wednesday in court. NBC12's Sarah Bloom was in the courtroom and she will have a full report beginning at 5 p.m.
