RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A Richmond man will go to court Tuesday, accused of letting his mother basically rot to death on her own sofa. It happened this past April at a home on Drewery Street.

57-year-old Richard Wallace faces elder abuse and neglect charges --- for not taking adequate care of his mother, 86-year-old Elsie Wallace.

Court records indicate Wallace's mother had dementia. Prosecutors say things got so bad, she actually had maggots on her body- while she was still alive.

One neighbor to the Wallace's remembers seeing Elsie Wallace walking up and down these streets aimlessly by herself. She said she wondered about Elsie's welfare and wondered what happened to her.

Investigators will reveal what they discovered about her death in court this week. At one point, defense attorneys questioned whether Wallace was competent enough to stand trial on the charges.

After a psychological exam, a judge ruled that he would be ok. The Commonwealth hopes to include testimony from family relatives who may say Wallace's care of his mother was deficient.

Medical examiner pictures also exist, showing the alleged neglect, but the defense team doesn't want them allowed in court, saying they're inflammatory and difficult to view.

Wallace is due in court at 9:30 a.m on Tuesday.
