Friday morning update on the search for Robert - NBC12 - WWBT - Richmond, VA News On Your Side

Friday morning update on the search for Robert

HANOVER, VA (WWBT) – In a Friday morning press briefing, the Hanover County Sheriff's Office updated the public on the search for eight-year-old Robert Wood, Jr.

Friday's search will focus again on a 12 to 14 mile stretch of the North Anna River. We're told the search effort along the river expanded "significantly" on Thursday.

Answering questions about Robert's parents involvement with the search, Captain Mike Trice said they were actively searching every day and doing everything within their limits to assist in locating their son.

Hundreds of volunteers also continue to turn out and help look for Robert.

On Thursday, a 50-year-old man from Henrico suffered a heart attack while assisting in the search. Rodney Clifton was helping out for a second day when the incident happened. He's currently recovering.

Right now, one of the lingering concerns crews have is the risk for rain and winter-like temperatures Friday afternoon and evening. However, they are working to have a plan in place in the event that the search continues into the night.

Another update is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Friday. That briefing will air live on NBC12 and stream on-line at NBC12.com.

Below, you'll find a closed-captioning transcript of the question and answer session between Captain Mike Trice and members of the local media:

>>> WHAT IS NOT TRANSPARENT IS THE INVESTIGATION THAT PARALLELS THESE KINDS OF INCIDENTS. I CAN TELL YOU IT HAS BEEN THOROUGH AND IT HAS BEEN COMPREHENSIVE. WE HAVE FOLK USED OUR BEST EFFORTS TO LOCATE ROBERT IS WITH THESE PEOPLE HERE TODAY.

>> [ INAUDIBLE ] BUT WHERE ARE THEY? [ INAUDIBLE ] THE VOLUNTEERS?

>> I TALKED TO EACH OF THESE -- THE FAMILY MEMBERS HAVE BEEN OUT SEARCHING EVERY DAY. THEY HAVE BEEN SHOULDER TO SHOULDER WITH THE VOLUNTEERS. THEY ARE DOING EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO WITHIN THEIR LIMITS TO ASSIST IN LOCATING THEIR SON. LIKE I SAID YESTERDAY, THERE'S NO PATTERN FOR THIS. THERE'S NO NORMAL RESPONSE FOR THIS. THEY'RE DOING THE BEST THEY CAN CIRCUMSTANCES P GIVEN.

>> [ INAUDIBLE ]

>> YES, THEY JUST WANT TO FIND THEIR SON, AND YOU KNOW, THEY'RE EMOTIONAL, WE HAVE AVAILABLE TO THEM 24 HOURS A DAY MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELORS TO HELP THEM WITH THAT. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS?

>> WHERE MR. CLIFTON FROM?

>> HE IS FROM HENRICO COUNTY.

>>> CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE RIVER?

>> WE WILL HAVE TEAMS DEPLOYED AGAIN TODAY ON THE RIVER. LIKE I SAID YESTERDAY, THERE'S POCKETS THAT WILL REQUIRE ADDITIONAL RESOURCES TO CHECK NOR THOROUGHLY AND THOSE TEAMS ARE BEING DEVELOPED AS WE SPEAK.

>> THE RIVER SEARCH HAS EXPANDED SIGNIFICANTLY YESTERDAY. WE WILL BE WORKING WITHIN THAT SAME ZONE.

>> THE SAME WITH THE [ INAUDIBLE ]

>> I LOOKED AT IT. IT'S ABOUT 14 MILES OF RIVER ON THE NORTH END OF THE RIVER.

>> [ INAUDIBLE ]

>> THE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS?

>> YEAH, THE OPERATIONAL THEME OVERNIGHT WITH THESE NINE SPECIALIZED TEAMS THAT HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED, BASED ON THE LAST POINT OF CONTACT, THE HIGHEST PROBABILITY THAT HE WOULD BE IN THAT -- THOSE PARTICULAR ZONES, THIS IS ABOUT A 3 QUARTER OF A 3 QUARTER OF A MILE AREA THAT IS SUBDIVIDED INTO 20 YEARS AND THEY USING THE NINE TEAMS TO GO THROUGH THERE SLOWLY, METHODICALLY, THEY'RE HIGHLY SPECIALIZED THAT IS WHERE THAT PARTICULAR UNIT HAS BEEN CONCENTRATING.

>> THEY HAVE BEEN CANVASSED BEFORE, YOU KNOW, THEY HAVE BEEN SUBDIVIDED BASED ON A NUMBER OF FACTORS, THE PLANNING THEME THOUGHT WERE RELEVANT IN ORDER TO BE MOST SUCCESSFUL.

>> [ INAUDIBLE ]

>> WE HAVE BEEN CONSTANTLY. LAST NIGHT THE TEAMS IN THE FIELD LAST NIGHT HAD SOME CHALLENGES WITH THE WIND. IT'S HARD TO HEAR, THE DOGS, IT'S DIFFICULT FOR THEM TO OPERATE IN THOSE CONDITIONS. SO LAST NIGHT WE HAD SOME CHALLENGES OPERATING IN THE FIELD.

>> ROBERT WHAT ABOUT -- WHAT ABOUT [ INAUDIBLE ]

>> NO, WE ARE NOT BRINGING ANYTHING ELSE INTO THE WOODS. WE RELY ON OUR TEAM MEMBERS TO FIND HIM. WE RECEIVED A LOT OF INFORMATION ON WHAT MIGHT WORK THROUGHOUT THE WEEK. NONE OF THAT MIGHT BE RIGHT. I MEAN WE UNDERSTAND HOUR CHALLENGES HERE WITH FINDING ROBERT, AND YOU KNOW, WE'RE DOING WHAT WE CAN WITH WHAT WE HAVE. ABSOLUTELY.

>> WELL, THANK YOU ALL, AND I WILL SEE YOU AGAIN AT 5:00. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE CALL ME.
