Rams & Spiders plan hoops celebrations for same night

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - VCU and the University of Richmond basketball teams shared a trip to the Sweet 16 in San Antonio.  Now they will share the same night to celebrate last year's teams that went deep into the tournament.

The University of Richmond announced Tuesday that on Friday, Nov. 11 last year's Sweet 16 team will be honored in a special celebration prior to the men's basketball home opener against American at 7:30 p.m.

The festivities start pre-game as the 2010-11 Atlantic 10 Champion Richmond men's basketball team, which reached the NCAA Sweet 16 and finished the year ranked in the Top-25, will be honored in a special pregame ceremony and will have their rings presented by members of the 1988 Sweet 16 team.

The celebration continues at halftime as we remember and honor the 1988 Sweet 16 team.  The first Spider team to make it to the Sweet 16 will be introduced and recognized at halftime, receiving their NCAA tournament rings for the first time in a ceremony at the Robins Center.

VCU will also honor last year's Final Four team during it's first game, which is on the same date - Friday, Nov. 11 against St. Francis.
