CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Chesterfield authorities are investigating a suspicious fire that started at an abandoned house off interstate 295.
Fire officials were worried the fire would spread to a wooded and brushy area nearby.
The vacant brick house is tucked away in an overgrown area near Enon Church Road.
No one was found inside. There was a bit of debris and trash in the house.
We're told drivers passing by called it in just after noon today.
"To my knowledge it's been abandoned for quite a while somewhere in the neighborhood when they built 295, I'm not exactly sure of that, but it's been abandoned for quite a few years," said Eddie Berry, with the Chesterfield Fire Department.
Now, investigators are trying to figure out just what caused the fire.
Chesterfield Police tell us neighbors reported seeing three suspicious people walking nearby at the time of the fire.
If you know anything that can help with this investigation, you're asked to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
