RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - An historic black cemetery in Richmond's East End got a little TLC this morning thanks to dozens of volunteers.
Del. Joe Morrisey, members of Delta Sigma Theta sorority and crews from the City of Richmond battled the thick over-growth that has taken over the site due to years of neglect.
Iconic Richmonders like Maggie Walker are buried there along with generations of African Americans.
Volunteers say it's important to preserve the cemetery.
"A lot of people have heard about it but never visited here. And if they did visit, they would be sad at what they see," said Del. Joe Morrisey.
The volunteers were able to clear an area the size of a football field, but there's still a lot of work to be done.
