Randolph-Macon Drops Heartbreaker to Washington and Lee

Ashland, VA (WWBT)- Washington & Lee scored what proved to be the game-winning touchdown with just over two minutes to play as the Generals topped ODAC rival Randolph-Macon, 34-30, Saturday afternoon in Ashland.

R-MC drops to 5-2 overall and 1-2 in the ODAC.  Washington & Lee improves to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

With the game tied at 27, R-MC took possession with 9:17 to go on the contest.  The Yellow Jackets put together a 10 play, 69 yard drive that stalled at the Generals 11 yard line.   Jackets' kicker Josh Storm connected on a 29 yard field goal attempt, giving R-MC a 30-27 edge with just over five minutes to play.

On the second play of Washington & Lee's next possession quarterback Charlie Westfal found Alex Evans for a 62 yard gain that put W&L at the R-MC six yard line.  Luke Heinshon scored from five yards out two plays later to push his team in front 34-30.

Randolph-Macon got the ball back with 1:38 on the clock and got to midfield before Jake Pelton picked off a Zac Naccarato pass to seal the win for the Generals.

Naccarato finished the day 20-of-33 for 324 yards and a pair of scores.   Nine of those passes went to Christian Cook for 105 yards, while Vance Hendren made four grabs for 92 yards.R-MC ran the ball for 153 yards on the day with Thaddeus Scruggs and Drake Sanders rushing for 84 and 59 yards, respectively.

R-MC racked up 477 yards of offense and held possession for 36:52.    Storm connected on all three of his field goal tries, including a career-long 49 yard attempt. 

The Generals gained 462 yards of total offense (231 passing/231 rushing) led by Westfal, who completed 7-of-12 passes for 231 yards and one touchdown and rushed 17 times for 98 yards. Heinsohn gained 99 yards and scored three touchdowns on 11 carries, while Murray tallied 36 yards rushing and 86 receiving, to go along with one touchdown. Evans snared three passes for 99 yards and Stewart had one catch for 50 yards and a score.

Randolph-Macon will be back in action next Saturday when it heads to Guilford for a 1:00 p.m. game.
