Richmond, VA (WWBT)- Varina and Atlee entered Friday as the only remaining unbeaten teams in Capital District play. At the end of the night, the Blue Devils asserted themselves as the team to beat and did so in a big way.
Varina put up 332 first half yards and dominated start to finish in a 54-11 rout of Atlee. Maurice Canady and P.T. Dixon paced the offense and led the Blue Devils to one of their best performances of the season. Canady opened up the scoring with a 19 yard touchdown pass to Dixon on Varina's first drive of the game. The second Blue Devil drive also ended in a touchdown, as Dixon took a one yard carry into the endzone to make it 14-0. Canady would add a 29 yard rushing score to give Varina the 21-0 lead after just the first quarter. After an Atlee field goal in the second, Canady found Dixon again for a 66 yard touchdown strike, putting the count at 27-3, following a missed extra point try. Canady's rushing score with three seconds left in the half gave Stu Brown's team a 34-3 lead at the break, shocking nearly everybody in the stadium.
The second half saw the scoring pace slow down slightly, but the results were the same, as Varina cruised to the convincing win. At the end of the night, the Devils had accumulated 506 yards of total offense. Dixon posted 115 receiving yards, 55 rushing yards and four total touchdowns. Canady completed seven of his 13 pass attempts for 212 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 124 yards and another two scores.
Before the game, Brown said that his team had put together the best week of practice in his four years at the head of the program. At the end of the night, Varina celebrated one of the best game's they've played under its coach. Atlee came in undefeated and coming off a big win over Hanover last Friday, so the lopsided score surprised many. The Blue Devils also got a big victory in the Division 6 playoff picture. Varina entered the night third in the power rankings and will stay there with the win.
Varina improves to 5-1, 3-0 in Capital District play, and travels to Henrico next Friday. Atlee falls to 5-1, 2-1 in the district, and heads to Glen Allen.
