Neighborhood wakes up to slashed tires

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A crime alert in Richmond, where more than a half-dozen neighbors woke up to slashed tires this morning. Now, police need help figuring out who did it.

It happened overnight in the 800 block of West 47th Street. That's just off Westover Hills Boulevard in South Richmond.

They know for certain it happened between midnight and 6:00 a.m. They also say that it wasn't a knife, but something long and sharp that punctured the tires.

But what happened on this street during those hours that lead to this crime, is still very unclear.

"Our neighbor, he walks or whatever in the morning and knocks on the door to let us know that all the tires were flat," said Sherry Kurtyka. Her car was still sitting on West 47th Street, disabled by a deflated tire.

It was the same story all the way down West 47th Street Wednesday morning. Police counted a total of 9 impacted cars, but even with all the damage, they don't have a lot of information about what happened.

Neighbors say they didn't see or hear anything. Police hope to speak to more victims, so they can try to narrow down the time that it happened.

"Everybody down the whole street was out fixing tires," said Kurtyka.

Fixing tires was a hassle, but what really bothers Kurtyka is not knowing who did it or whether that person might strike again: "I thought this morning, I said someone's out there that they had done this to the vehicles that they were out there somewhere."

She can't understand why anyone would target her- or her neighbors.

"It seems like things are getting worse. Maybe people are just meaner. It's mean." said Kurtyka.

Interestingly, only the cars on one side of the street were damaged.

If you were a victim- or if you know anything about this crime- call Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000.
