Mineral weighing concert venue options

MINERAL, VA (WWBT) - Alan Jackson is coming to Mineral, but how can a town recovering from a historic earthquake host a country superstar?

Town leaders just found out late this afternoon Mineral was the top pick!

"I'm excited that everyone in Mineral voted. We're such a small town, that I'm surprised we won!" said Julie Robinson.

But hosting a concert for 1,000 to 3,000 people is a big undertaking and some here have some concerns.

"I don't know if we're gonna have the capacity or where we're gonna be able to do it," said Robinson.

Alan Jackson's crew still hasn't given details about when or where he plans to come, but town officials already have some ideas.

Walton Park already echoes with music by the school marching band. Many think it could be a good fit for Alan Jackson too. Another option could be the high school football field.

We also spoke with a representative from the county Sheriff's Office. He says they're 100% behind this concert, and whatever they have to do, they'll make it work. They've worked with crowds this large before.

"We will absolutely take care of it," reinforced Vice Mayor Bernice Wilson-Kube. "I think that we have several places in mind and many, many organizations that have said they will help us. Where there's a will, there's a way and we will do this."

The concert is free- many in Mineral are hoping it might turn into some type of fundraising event for earthquake victims. We'll let you know when we get the details for the concert.

Our temperatures have been trending colder than average for about 65-percent of the days of this month so far, and it looks like that overall trend could hang tough not only through most of next week, but after a very brief break, could quickly return and take us into the half of May.  Blame the semi-persistent trough, or dip southward, in the jet stream over the Midwest and East, something we've seen frequently since early March!
