Fayetteville, NC (WWBT)- A hot start that included two first quarter touchdowns was not enough for Virginia State, as the Trojans saw their two game winning streak snapped on the road on Saturday afternoon.
Virginia State saw a 14-0 first quarter lead disappear as Fayetteville State dominated the final three frames en route to a 49-21 victory. The loss evens up VSU's record at 3-3 and the Trojans are now 2-2 in CIAA play.
Things could not have started off much better for Virginia State. On their first drive of the game, the Trojans marched down the field and capped off the drive with a 20 yard Kenay Hawks touchdown run out of the wildcat. Later in the opening frame, Tyler Wilson found paydirt from six yards out to give VSU the 14-0 cushion.
The wheels fell off for the Trojans in the second quarter. Colon Bailey scored three rushing touchdowns to propel the Broncos in front, 21-14, at the break. That started a run that saw 49 unanswered Fayetteville State points and six Virginia State turnovers to swing the game heavily in the Broncos favor.
Wilson would end the day as the Trojans leading rusher with 75 yards and the score. Jarred Battle struggled under center, completing 19 of his 36 pass attempts for 170 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions.
The Trojans head to Elizabeth City State next Saturday, looking to bounce back.
