CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Teachers in Chesterfield and all across the area are getting $1,000 in free school supplies today, which is making quite a difference in many classrooms.
This actually comes at the perfect time. Many school districts are facing deep budget cuts and many teachers actually have to pay for their own school supplies for their own classrooms.
The surprise is evident on 3rd grade teacher Kimberly Parnell's face. Not just for the flowers and her new chair, but for what's inside a big box. $1,000 worth of school supplies for her classroom and each of these kids she spends hours with each day.
"I'm overwhelmed and so excited. I know any teacher would be so excited to have this happen and I'm just touched. I really am," says Kimberly.
With her parents on hand, Parnell knows how far this will go. In the midst of deep budget cuts, keeping her classroom filled with supplies is quite the challenge. "You do spend a lot of money being a teacher and you have to have a budget. It gets your excited about learning again!"
Principal Christopher Hart is the one who nominated Parnell for this big surprise. Not just because she is a great teacher here at Chalkley Elementary, "but also she is a teacher leader. She helps a lot of teachers in our school in terms of helping with writing and science curriculum matters," says Hart.
"It feels good to be recognized for your hard work. The kids are so excited," says Hart.
Each student in the class got their own pencil box full of supplies too. Kaylee Rodriguez is excited not only about that -- but to also have a teacher making a big difference in her life. "She knows she is the best teacher in the school. It's exciting to know she is the best one."
Now things are expected to get even better, thanks to a big donation.
The donations come from Office Max.
