RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A son accused of attacking his mother with a meat cleaver is expected in Henrico court Tuesday.
We should find out if Joseph Yates is mentally competent to stand trial after what police are calling a vicious attack.
Police say earlier this summer, Yates walked into the kitchen, grabbed a meat cleaver, found his mother and attacked — breaking her skull and almost cutting off her fingers.
Investigators say his mother barely survived.
Yates has been in jail since that day without bond. He has a history of mental health problems.
He's been accused before of attacking his mother before, back in 2007, while off his meds.
Doctors will say if he is fit to go on trial.
