Virginia Needs Overtime to Survive Vandals

Charlottesville, VA (WWBT)- A two-point conversion pass by Idaho's Brian Reader fell incomplete and Virginia escaped with a 21-20 victory in overtime Saturday.

Idaho's Daniel Micheletti ran in a blocked punt and Reader completed a two-point conversion pass to Marsel Posey to tie the game 14-14 in the fourth quarter and force overtime.

Virginia got the ball first in the extra period and scored on David Watford's 27-yard pass to Dominique Terrell. Reader matched that with a 23 yard TD pass to Armauni Johnson.

But instead of kicking an extra point to force a second overtime, underdog Idaho (1-4) went for the win and came up short.

Virginia's Perry Jones scored two first-half touchdowns, and Idaho got a pair of field goals by Trey Farquhar

Despite the close score, the Cavaliers held a sizable advantage in many categories.  Virginia out-gained Idaho in total offense, 496-296, passing yards, 335-193, and had the advantage in first downs, 27-12.

Jones rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown, while Michael Rocco completed 20 of his 30 pass attempts and had a touchdown pass.  Matoaca product Kris Burd was the Wahoos' leading receiver, pulling down eight catches for 123 yards.

Virginia improves to 3-2 and will host Georgia Tech at Scott Stadium on October 15, following a bye week.
