Mechanicsville, VA (WWBT)- Hanover has not lost a regular season game since October 9, 2009, and has not fallen at home since the week before. The last team to top the Hawks on their home field was Highland Springs as part of a seven game winning streak in the series. After snapping that skid last year, Hanover was able to overcome some early rain and make it two in a row over the Springers.
Hanover scored a fourth quarter field goal and the Hawk defense held strong as the squad snuck by Highland Springs, 10-7, in both teams' Capital District opener. Rain showers moved into the area around 6:00 pm and a steady shower fell until about 7:40 pm, making for some sloppy conditions. The scoreboard would show nothing by zeroes after the first quarter, with a Shay Dennis interception being the only highlight. The Highland Springs defensive back caught a tipped ball, but the turnover would not lead to points. Aaron Hall returned the favor in the second quarter, picking off DJ Johnson. With less than a minute to play in the first half, LJ Jones put Hanover on the scoreboard with a two yard rush for a touchdown, and the Hawks held a 7-0 lead at the break.
The second half would not see much scoring either, with the two teams exchanging possessions without points. Jones uncorked a 33 yard run at the end of the third quarter to set up a Matt Pelman field goal in the fourth, giving Hanover the 10-0 lead. Highland Springs would not quit, as Johnson rushed for a six yard score with 1:42 remaining to trim the lead to 10-7, but the Springers could not recover the onside kick, sealing the victory for Hanover.
The Hawks improve to 4-0 and will head to Atlee next Friday, which is also 4-0. Highland Springs falls to 2-2 and will travel to Glen Allen.
