RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - An unusual note on an inspection report brought us to Da Lat Restaurant at 9125 West Broad Street in Henrico. This Vietnamese restaurant usually earns good inspection scores. But this time a state inspector found five critical violations, plus a dog crate and dog biscuits in the kitchen.
We asked employee and restaurant spokesperson Kevin Thinh about it.
"It was the owner's daughter's birthday and it was a gift, and it's already removed," he explained.
The restaurant's owner assured us a dog was never in the kitchen. To fix the other problems, Thinh told us staff were reminded when to wash their hands and to wear gloves when touching ready-to-eat foods, such as the spring rolls. "You need to have gloves, no contact with the bare hands, so that issue was also addressed."
Thinh showed us the dishwasher has sanitizer, raw beef is no longer stored above lettuce where it can drip, and the mixing bowls over the sink, once noted as greasy, are now clean.
Da Lat earned a perfect score on it's follow-up inspection, no dog crate to be found.
"We clean everyday and do major cleanup probably weekly" said Thinh.
Down in Chesterfield, El Tequila Norteno at 9645 Jefferson Davis Highway had 4 critical violations. The inspector said cockroaches were around the kitchen hand washing sink. But the roaches and all other violations were gone in time to earn a perfect score on the follow-up inspection two weeks later.
This week's NBC12 Hall of Fame Award goes to Roy's Big Burger at 5200 Lakeside Avenue in Henrico. This hamburger stand has pulled off perfect scores on three inspections in a row.
And a new restaurant/bar is coming to Shockoe Bottom. Richmond BizSense reports Synergy will open in October next to the Berkeley Hotel on South 12th Street.
