RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)-Several sheriffs around Virginia are under scrutiny for hiring relatives.
That includes Richmond Sheriff CT Woody who was the subject of several newspaper stories last week for hiring family members.
Law enforcement groups defend the practice, saying relatives of officers and deputies tend to be successful because they know how the department operates.
Sheriffs like Woody are independently elected constitutional officers.
That means he's not required to follow Richmond's nepotism policy.
