HENRICO, VA (WWBT) – The man who police say stabbed a Martin's co-worker several times has been released from the hospital and jailed.

Derek C. James, 29, of Wood Acres Road in Manakin-Sabot, was booked Saturday morning following his release from VCU Medical Center, according to Henrico Police.

Police say at about 6:00 a.m. Thursday, James stabbed a 27-year-old female co-worker and later stabbed himself inside the Martin's at The Village Shopping Center. Police have not disclosed a possible motive for the stabbing.

A witness who was not authorized to speak publicly told NBC12 the violent altercation went on for several intense minutes, starting near the café area of the store. Other employees, and at least one customer were inside at the time.

The store was closed for nearly six hours Thursday before re-opening. A Martin's executive said the female victim, who has not been identified, was last known to be in stable condition.

James is expected to make his initial court appearance Monday morning.
