Williamsburg, VA (WWBT)- Saturday found the top two teams in the CAA preseason poll facing off on the gridiron, as James Madison visited conference favorite William and Mary. By the end of the night, the Dukes would make themselves the new favorites to take the top spot.
Dae'Quan Scott led a ferocious James Madison ground attack as the Dukes topped the Tribe, 20-14. After a scoreless first period, Varina graduate Justin Thorpe found Kerby Long for a 52 yard touchdown play, giving the Dukes a 7-0 lead. Cameron Starke would boot home a 26 yard field goal to give JMU the 10-0 advantage at halftime.
William and Mary would put up a fight. Quarterback Michael Graham, making his first career collegiate start, hooked up with D.J. Mangas for a 32 yard touchdown, pulling the Tribe to within three. Scott would score in the fourth quarter to give James Madison the 17-7 advantage, and Starke's 34 yard field goal put the Dukes up by 13 points. William and Mary would score again with 1:25 to play in the game, as Graham hit Alex Gottlieb for a touchdown, but it was not enough.
Scott finished the night with 112 yards and the touchdown. Thorpe only attempted four passes on the evening, completing three of them for 69 yards and the second quarter TD. He also tallied 81 rushing yards. Graham was 14-of-26 in his first start, while not throwing any picks and tossing two touchdowns.
William and Mary falls to 2-2 and will head to Villanova next Saturday, while James Madison will host Richmond and improves to 3-1.
