Petersburg raising utility rates

PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - Petersburg residents are about to pay more for water and sewer services.

Friday night, the city announced the water rate is going up 5% and the sewer rate is increasing by 7.25%.

Petersburg says the increase is to help pay for new equipment and to make up for higher costs of waste-water treatment, among other things.

The change should add just under $3.50 to the average bill.

Council actually approved the increase back in June, but customers will see the change reflected in their October utility bill.
