Family worries about missing woman

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA (WWBT) - A worried family calls NBC12 for help saying police aren't doing enough to find a 40-year-old Chesterfield woman missing since last Thursday.

Loved ones believe, Dawn French, was a victim of the internet, saying she was possibly lured by a bad man she met online.

Dawn's own mother and boyfriend say, even though she's an adult, Dawn depends on her family a lot and would never just disappear, not show for work, or cut all contact with the family.

Michael Staton last saw his girlfriend, Dawn French, a week ago.

"I just want her to come back home," said Staton.

Living together, Staton always thought dawn spent too much time on the internet.

"She was into some kind of chat thing, it was called IMVU. I've never been on it so I don't know," said Staton.

IMVU is a social network - members use 3D avatars to interact online.

"She really wouldn't let me see, lot of times she would be very secretive so that's what made me so suspicious of her," he said.

Dawn never left a note, or hinted to anyone, even her mother that she was leaving. Doris Coley also felt her daughter had an addiction with meeting people online.

"She had this Skype - when she could bring pictures up and talk to them and I told her don't do that, you're going to be talking to the wrong person," said Coley.

Family members say Dawn pulled out money from her Wells Fargo account twice using an ATM in Canada. Richmond police say they also believe Dawn could be in Canada.

Richmond police say they're following up on every tip. But at this time don't suspect foul play.

This is a 40-year-old woman who disappeared in the middle of the night, possibly of her own will. But Doris tells a different story.

"[It's] very frustrating when, you know, police tell you they can't do anything, and a detective says, ‘I can't do anything. She left on her own accord.' Well I said, 'I know my daughter and I know she was lured away from somebody off of that internet,'" said Coley.

Even though police don't suspect foul play, they tell me this is an active investigation and finding Dawn French is a priority.
