RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – Watch out! An irate driver police said put a man in the hospital is still on the road. Richmond Police explained the driver caused an accident on the Powhite Parkway after confronting a 24-year-old man in a road rage incident.
News of the near-deadly road rage accident on a highway most Richmonders take every day evoked some strong reactions.
"That's awful," exclaimed Marjorie Bertolino.
The condition of the victim's car is a message about aggressive driving in itself. The Honda Accord and red Ford pickup truck were spotted swerving in and out of lanes on the Powhite Parkway. Then police said the truck pulled in front of the Honda and slammed on the brakes. Bertolino, told NBC12 it is scary to even think about.
"We have to be so defensive in our driving," she said. "I never know what to expect from another driver."
The Honda driver cut the wheel to avoid crashing and lost control. The 24-year-old is now in the hospital.
Drivers we talked to said they'd never take a situation so far.
"I usually use obscenities in my car," Bertolino recalled.
"I don't get too upset about it," said David White. "Maybe give them a dirty look or something but I just kind of blow it off."
Richmond Police don't know yet what started the aggression but advised there's nothing another driver can do that should ever let a situation escalate to the point that anger becomes the driver.
"I don't know what the solution is but people ought to mellow out," White maintained. "I mean, it's like we all are sharing the road."
The suspect vehicle is a 2004 red Ford Ranger pickup with North Carolina plates YNM 8924. It may have taken one of the Chippenham exits off the Powhite. If you've seen it, call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
