FREDRICKSBURG, VA (WWBT) - Former Governor Doug Wilder's dream to build a national slavery museum is apparently dead in the water. The project in Fredericksburg has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
Papers filed in U.S. bankruptcy court say the museum has more than $3 million in debts, and that after bankruptcy proceedings, no funds would be available to creditors.
The museum was supposed to open by 2004 but was never able to raise sufficient funds. No work has been done on the site since 2007.
