Woman fights to care for feral cats in Henrico County

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)-A Henrico woman is fighting the county for her love of cats.

The county says she's breaking the law by feeding and caring for feral cats near her West End home.

This is literally a cat fight in Henrico County, but this issue won't be a battle in a courtroom. The hearing will be before the County Board of Zoning Appeals.

Susan Mills takes care of several feral cats found outside her home, but neighbors are complaining, saying she treats the cats like pets.

That's a violation of county ordinances that limit the amount of pets you can have. A county planning manager agrees and says caring for feral cats is against the law.

Mills has support from the SPCA. They say the code provides for exceptions to living in a house.

The hearing is set for 9 a.m. at the Henrico County Administration Building.
