Oakland, CA (WWBT)- Goochland native Justin Verlander is making the choice for the American League Cy Young Award an easy one as he continues to find the win column at a pace that baseball hasn't seen for quite some time.
Verlander became the first pitcher since 2004 to win 24 games in a season in Detroit's 3-0 win at Oakland on Sunday afternoon. It also marks his 12th straight victory as he asserts himself as the clear AL Cy Young favorite. During that streak, he has a 2.28 ERA with 91 strikeouts in 87 innings. Verlander lasted eight innings in Sunday's victory, giving up just three hits in the effort, while striking out six and walking three.
He continues to be the ace of a team that won its first division title since 1987 and is looking for home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
