Crowds come out for Cops & Doughnuts event

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – Success was sweet for the Richmond Police Department Saturday. Officers teamed up with Krispy Kreme to support the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which raises money for the Special Olympics.

People who stopped by the Krispy Kreme on Broad Street got a chance to "Dunk a Cop" in a dunk tank to try to win a dozen free doughnuts.

"It's a funny stereotype," said Richmond Police Captain Harvey Powers. "Years ago when there wasn't a 24-hour gas station or 24-hour grocery store, the cops that worked the midnight shift had to find a place to eat. And, usually that was a local diner with some not so good for you food and we like to play on that a little bit."

The event was originally scheduled for earlier, but was pushed back because of Hurricane Irene.
