RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)-Statistics show one out of every five people in Richmond live below the poverty level.
According to Mayor Dwight Jones, improving regional transit could help turn those numbers around.
That was his message Wednesday night at his Anti-Poverty Commission meeting.
The group, including representatives from surrounding counties, came together at this monthly meeting.
Jones says an effective regional transportation system would alleviate the problem by helping people get to their jobs.
"We have a transportation system but it needs to be strategically thought out. It needs to be more comprehensive" says Jones.
Jones also says that includes reaching out to communities outside of Henrico and Chesterfield.
