MILFORD, VA (WWBT)- After seeing their scheduled game postponed on Friday, Henrico and Caroline hit the field for some Monday night football action of the high school variety. The Warriors looked for a victory in their season opener, while the Cavaliers hoped to rebound from a loss last Friday night to Essex.
At the end of the night, it was Henrico using a big second half to pull away and claim the win, 34-18. The Cavaliers struck first on Duane Fields's 60 yard touchdown run on Caroline's first possession. A missed PAT attempt made the score 6-0. The Warriors would respond, as Malcolm Bell found Andrew Early for an 18 yard strike, putting Henrico on top, 7-6. Joe Shiflett's nine yard touchdown run put Caroline back on top, 12-7, as the Cavs failed on a two point conversion try. Henrico would respond with a field goal, would take the lead and pull away in the second half to start out its 2011 schedule 1-0.
Bell would post solid numbers as the Warriors' signal caller. The senior completed 20-of-34 pass attempts for 203 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for another score, accounting for 24 of his team's 34 points. Bell is being looked upon by head coach Roger Brookes and his team to lead Henrico's no-huddle offense and showed he's up to the challenge with his performance on Monday.
Henrico will hit the road again on Friday as the Warriors head to Deep Run. Caroline, which falls to 0-2 on the year, looks to right the ship at King William.
